A new era begins for Assam cricket as Powar aims to elevate the squad.
Kiran Powar, former Mumbai and Baroda cricketer, has been appointed as the head coach of Assam’s senior men’s team for the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season. At 50, this marks his first stint at the senior level, and he’s keen to bring his wealth of domestic experience to the role. Powar has a respectable record, with nearly 3,500 runs across 71 First-Class and List A matches, and he’s ready to make his mark.
This appointment comes on the back of his interactions with the Assam setup during the CK Nayudu Trophy, which left him impressed with the association's vision. "I'm really looking forward to working with them," Powar stated enthusiastically. He also expressed gratitude towards the Mumbai Cricket Association, acknowledging the support he received during challenging times.
Last season, Assam had a rollercoaster ride in the Ranji Trophy, showcasing resilience but often falling short in crucial moments. Notably, a game against Services became infamous as the shortest in tournament history, highlighting both their struggles and potential. With Powar at the helm, fans are eager to see if Assam can turn their fortunes around in the upcoming season.
